A new book has been published, "Living lightly, living faithfully" which can be downloaded free of charge from www.faraday.st-edmunds.cam.ac.uk/Shop.php?Mode=BooksIt is a collection of essays examining the link between economic growth and environmental sustainability, from several (mainly religious) perspectives. It all makes interesting reading, but two chapters in particular - Chapter 2 - "the role of credit and debt in our economic crises" by Ann Pettifor (pp 49-64). Those of us who saw Ann Pettifor when she came to Sheffield in November will know she is an outspoken critic of debt-fueled growth. She says "there is a direct link between the deregulation of the finance sector, its power to create credit ... and increases in consumption and fossil fuel emissions" Chapter 14 - "the environment and sustainability - an Islamic perspective" by Fazlun Khalid (pp 221-243). Fazlun is described on Wikipedia as "the single most active Islamic environmentalist alive today" - - and he is also a family friend (hence my interest in this book)!! He says in his article "sustainable development is unachievable in the current growth model ... where growth is fed by limitless credit created by the financial system..." The section on the Muslim approach to money (pp 235-240) is interesting to those of us who know little about this aspect of Islam
